Astronomy Down Home
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
Why people think we have to look to stars
Is strange. Reds, yellows, whites and blues
Are matched on earth. Quite far enough floats Mars.
Why look at horoscopes when you can choose
To look at orchids, Lavender and red
Are everywhere down here. The yellow on
The red-winged black bird, there by his grand red,
Is bright enough for normal use. The dawn
Brings white in clouds. Who needs to stare at spheres
A hundred million light years distant. White
Is white. The white of egret plumage cheers
The eye. To hanker after more risks blight.
The birds and flowers offer quite enough
In colors. Just ignore star gazers’ guff.
