The Right Register:  Ecclesiastes and

the Sub-continental Indian Christian

at Choral Evensong, St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle

Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

Ecclesiastes 11:9

“whatsoever things are lovely,  . . . if there be any praise, think on these things”

Philippians 4:8

So darkly beautiful, just in and of
Himself, so dark like carvings in the wood
Of arches carved in choirs, arcs set above
The places where the men and boys have stood
For centuries, he now has the righteous nose
So perfect in its beauty in this place,
So lovely where the candle lighting glows
Upon his high pitched arching nostrils, face,
And perfectly along the straight line from
Those dark phrase eyebrows to the sweet curved tip
Of nose above the blackest whiskers come
From handsome manliness upon his lip.
Eyelashes and eyes thicken awe. A horde
Of beauty crammed in the house of the Lord!
