Epics and Roads

               Epics and Roads

The epics of the Greeks, then Roman roads —

They go — and go, and last — and last — .

The Appian Way’s length — and Olympic odes —

Seem destined for forever.  Histories cast

From ancient lyres and interlocking stones

Now teach the truth about these cultures.  Lines

Of elegies and curving sculptures, tones

Of Homer, these provide the lasting mines

For later minds to grasp set meanings in.

The Greeks upheld swayed beauty in the shape

Their universe presented.  Armored shin

And captured prisoners Rome adored — and rape.

The Greeks did not sculpt military gains,

But Rome pomped victims carved in marble trains.
