The Messenger Who Gored

The Messenger Who Gored

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

I know of an old woman with an eye

Of pewter, no, not even purest tin.

Her revelations from Christ’s temple sky

Gave insight into other Christians’ sin.

The chief among these was the pope whose crown,

Three-tiered, spelled out the number six six six,

But brothers and the sisters in her town

Were sinful.  She required them each to fix

Iniquity inside themselves and act

Accordingly.  Their hunching hands involved

In self-abuse were slime.  So, lacking tact

She told them that their souls were not resolved.

She also said that smoking fathers’ sweat

Could harm their infants.  She wrote out Christ’s threat.
