The Cousins in a Florida Afternoon

Away, Away

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
Dedicated to Nikolai Klyuev and Sergei  Yesmenin together

In the grove of oranges a muddle of

The summer sunbeams forms below the leaves and shade.

Down there the huddle of the light shows love

Towards mockingbirds that fluidly abrade

The August heat and sweat’s humidity

With stream-cool singing.  Little critters shun

The playing of the boys, stupidity

Of fun their only weapon in the sun.

The minnows in the brook dart through the light

To darkness as the boys to attempt to coop

Them in a Mason jar.  The threat is slight

To fins that dart about and shadow loop.

At home two mothers get some needed rest

From boy rambunctions—mothers in their nest.
