He had a love much deeper than the cave

Of Plato, love that like a lever moves

Not just the earth but also makes hearts crave

The cosmos, love with centaur’s hooves,

As powerful and male as if a saint

As deep as Thomas of Aquinas’ mind

Might struggle with this love because its feint

Of lust might knock man down on roads as blind

As Saul; immaculate as Duns the Scot,

This love now suffered from cannot be touched

By logic of philosophers.  They ought

To know men’s hopelessness when love has clutched.

  When love has isolated mind from heart,

    The taste of logic is repulsive, tart.
