Long, long before poor Homer and the lines
Of Vedas and Upanishads, before
The proto-Cuneiform, our human signs
And words and poetry began to pour
From human hearts. When men and mastodons
Walked earth together, humans had to give
Expression to their thoughts. Before mere Bronze
Age, men employed carved marks. We cannot live
Without our words, it seems. The baby child
Of language lines, the Bible made of myth
And letters, only lately has beguiled
Our brains. Our tongues were our first megalith.
We think that we are in a special mode
Because we’ve learned to write computer code.
