Unbalanced Gods
“I the LORD thy God am a jealous God” ~ Exodus 20:5
Prometheus was never praised, adored
Or worshiped like true ancient gods required.
Demanding sacrifices for reward
Of favors, those were monsters. They inspired
Deep superstition, or at least their priesthoods did.
Olympian and bolder Near East gods
Competed, wanting to command, forbid
And cause the human grovelling. Their squads
Of priestesses and hierophants took bribes
Of sacrificial victims in their scores.
The pious Mediterranean tribes
Approached, gave in, and even mounted whores.
Prometheus just helped and didn’t plead
For anything. Giving fulfilled his need.
