Zoo and the Pyramid of Cheops
When humans are becoming rare and are
The pale, pale blue of near extinction, will
Unique enclosures for these then bizarre
Examples of the species give a thrill
To aliens who’ve put them in a zoo?
And what will men and women think there in
Their cage? What will these remnant captives do
To wile away the decades? Will chagrin
Deflate them into lumps? No, they will dream
Of bygone glories, crumbling stones,
Picassos, locomotives powered by steam,
Of symphonies and Satchmo trumpet tones.
..They’ll daydream of Dante’s terza rima
…. And orange light above Hiroshima.
