Wonky Shoulder Christ
Perhaps the reason why the painting makes
Christ’s shoulder look deformed is not because
The artist, Rubens, wants to show God aches
For human suffering he’s caused with flaws
In his creation. Why this wonky joint
Was perpetrated on the viewer by
A master artist, just to disappoint,
Shines as a mystery from the canvas. Try
As hard as possible we can’t ignore
It. Maybe paintings far too often showed
The Christ as hunky, someone to adore,
Was far too easy, very far from good.
To counter this the oils show a cripple
With shocking shoulder and nasty nipple.
