When Portraits Were in Silhouette

When Portraits Were in Silhouette

When portraits were in silhouette, they told
The truth.  Sliced outlines filled with black reveal
The human situation.  Seldom gold-
And sterling-leaf were rubbed on to conceal

Our inner murkiness.  Of course if they
Had been applied, behind the plated sheet
Dark would be lurking.  Veneer leads astray
Too often; honest shapes aren’t what we meet.
Sly carat count is  evil, thin or dense.
Say you are black or white and we will feed
On guilt or on your blankest innocence.

We all will glut ourselves and fill our need.
..When we have tasted fully, we’ll regret
….We didn’t stick to pretty silhouette.
