Verlaine on la Poésie

      Verlaine on la Poésie

“a composer is someone who desires, as a male desires” ~ Jean Barraqué

A poet is a man who knows desire,

Desire as love, affection, and as lust,

Devotion as a spirit’s candle fire,

Aflame as silently as men who must

Refrain from speech as Trappist monks inspired

By bitterest determination to

Stretch out the principle of awe required.

True poets are the men who can construe

The holy writ of mystery as poise

Between the worship of blood red’s delight

Brought on by love of women and grown boys,

And passion as in flaming phoenix flight.

..True love is stronger than a sacred bough.

….True love is deeper than a hermit’s vow.
