Throbbing Out Music in March

In winter in the bushes near the ground

The uguisu pushes out a note

Two times “chut chut.”  Far from being profound

The sound comes out from tiny off-white throat

As if complaining that the spring is long

Away still.  When that season comes, the notes

Become the archetype of perfect song.

The lower limbs and branches bear the throats

Of winged devotion to wide March days

And all they guarantee.  Japan sings, filled

With tiny melodies.  Their measure sprays

Across the air inside a woodland thrilled.

..Perhaps this tunefulness produces blooms

….On plum tree bark of singing petalled plumes.
