The Male Skylark and Love

The Male Skylark and Love

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

The skylark sings alone but not to be

Alone.  He sings to find true love for then

He sings above his chicks.  This male makes free

With singing.  Skylarks sing though unlike men

Who serenade for dawn of love then fly

Away.  The skylark casts his notes to ground

And not just sky.  His notes are lullaby

To little ones below.  His notes go round

The landscape and the firmament but note:

They also reach his hatchlings and his mate,

Their nest beneath his flight.  Paternal throat

Sends blessings down to bobbing bills that wait.

He thinks that little ones need music, not

Just insects, song by little beaklings caught.
