The Long Shining

The Long Shining

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

An art historian has called the art

Of Ancient Greece a long, long shade.  He’s young,

Can be forgiven, since he lacks the heart

To see the truth.  He gives his callow tongue

To sweeping comments as a glitter ball

In disco ignorance.  The glancing glints

Show up the truth but, sweeping, cast a pall

On statues.  Skimming, he flips these as hints

Instead of solid utterness beyond

His scope of understanding.  Marble might

And bulge of bronze reveal that he has conned

Himself through his intelligentsia’s blight.

He sees the object and he isn’t stunned.

White Aphrodite leaves this lad outgunned.
