Sin is Not Thinking; and, Sin is Feeling Instead of Thinking: Two Sonnets

   Sin Is Not Thinking

If Eve had only thought about the text

Surrounding her and meditated on

The clear instructions given her, the hexed

Catastrophe would not have gone

To her destruction.  All around her grew

The scent of beauty. She saw all the  hints

Perfection gave her everywhere, the blue

Of heaven and the petals’ fragrant tints,

But, no, she left consideration of

The overwhelming evidence to taste

Against advice from overwhelming love.

She could have reckoned, but opted for waste.

Eve could have thought. “This world I have is good.

I’ll stick with what I have, ignoring  “should.”

Sin Is Feeling Instead of Thinking

But Adam?  He was even worse at thought.

He’d had the consummate supernal joy

Beside him and around him.  He was caught

In Eden and been given every toy

His soul and body could conceive.  He had

The mastery of woman, earth, and of

Himself.  Seductive whims of more were bad.

To him, though, he was asked to give up love

Inside the lovely creature holding out the fruit.

He knew that she was doomed to die because

Of thoughtlessness.  He mustn’t lose her chute,

That slimy ripeness he had known.  God’s laws

Became as nothing when he had to choose.

There was only one thing he dare not lose.*
