It holds its hairiness around its heart,

This fathomed creature with its shell of pearl.

Abductor muscles pull two halves apart

And clamp them tight.  A deep-sea love in swirl

Is its emotion, pumping out its sperm

Or eggs in zillions.  Humans would do well

If they could spread themselves in autumn term

Of warmest waters, casting love as spell

Around them, loving in the widest cloud,

Translucent, even white in wandering search

For eggs, transparent eggs for sperm to crowd

Around.  The eggs and sperm meet, meet and lurch.

A prophet has been known to eat their kin

Behind a prophet’s drapes because of sin.
