Miss Nills Whose Life Was Too Long

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

Her life was neither short nor was it long.

She wasted it as fungi scatter spores,

In tiny nothings spewed.  This meant her song

Was never written.  No celestial shores

Received her embassies.  She reigned as queen

Of Lilliput.  Her thoughts lacked sail and ship.

She had no messages to send.  No Magdalene,

She had no sex with fun.  They saw her hip

Shape . . . but didn’t bother.  Feelings came

And feelings went, but, whether large or small, they weren’t

Important.  Once there was a candle flame,

But as she fluttered, both her wings were burnt.

She dreamed she left a mark on kids she taught.

She didn’t even leave a smudge or blot.
