Melodies for Sonnets
I searched the Web for melodies to sing
A sonnet to, and YouTube offered four.
Four measley tunes for sonnets! Here’s the thing:
I reckon at the very least that more
Than 40,000,000 sonnets will have been
Composed since Petrarch tidied up the form
And Wyatt, Surrey, Shakespeare, and the Queen
Made writing sonnets just about the norm
In English poetry, not to mention
The Greeks and Germans, Spaniards and the French—
And there wasn’t even an abstention
