Kyoto Shrines
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
Inside the temples there beneath the trees
Love’s lights remain aglow. Beside the eaves
Of holy places as if under seas
Religion offers solace as from leaves
Mixed in with incense sticks and lolling smoke.
Among the trees and temples are the limbs
Of bonsai, mini maples and one oak
That looks as ancient as the oldest hymns.
No monks or nuns are needed. Sadness chants
The sacraments and liturgies away.
No blare of ads’ commercialism rants.
The lane says souls and specters have their sway.
Some wind chimes feel the truth inside the breeze
And sing the notes of spiritual decrees.
[This sonnet is to be read in conjunction with the sonnet “Sacred Sects and Shinto Shrine Because of Grief and Woe.”]
