Hills

                Hills

I like that hills are taught by autumn how

To mean and learn from leaves what orange warns.

Hills take their definition from fall’s now

And from its sharpened hoariness of horns.

I like how hills are taught by castles, walls

And forts what shorter lengths of time must bring

To knowledge and to wisdom.  Waterfalls

Teach hills.  They learn together how to sing.

I like how hills take lessons from the lines

Of poetry that they inspire.  Hills cite

These verses when the slopes learn poets’ signs

By heart precipitously taking flight.

I love how hills desire to take the thought

Of accidents and never dwell on ought.
