Baked Alaska

           Baked Alaska

Our friendship is a strange confection, as
Substantial, insubstantial as the best
Things always are.  Its fragile surface has
A lightness to it; a simple bride, dressed
In satin, springs to mind (easily torn),
And then beneath that shiny crust, broken
Whites (now colored like a young unicorn)
Uncertainly, but surely betoken
We know not what just yet.  All this is held
Together by a chemistry that sticks
Such ruined things into a new shape, belled
Like light swells out from fragrant candle wicks.
..Protected at the center something cold
….Is lurking, insulated in this mold.
