Awkward

           Awkward

Repeatedly I’ve seen you do a dance,

A little travesty of happiness.

It is a dance but doesn’t give a chance

To sentiment or Hallmark sappiness.

Those steps are more a mockery and brief.

They really only say, “Don’t look at me

Too seriously.  Looking too long brings grief

Or something more pathetic.  What you see

In these self-denigrating steps is my

Inane choreography to say, ‘Hey,

I’m just another unconvincing guy

Who knows enough to laugh at what you say.’

I laugh and do this silly little jig

When what you say about me is too big.”
