Annie Dillard Will Be 72 Tomorrow
For Chuck
This Sunday Annie Dillard, that clear mind
And mystic, will be twelve and three score years.
She saw, she saw, and wrote about when blind
Eyes saw as if the music of the spheres
Became as visible to them as we
See blue and scarlet. As a child she saw
A polyphemus moth that she set free
Walk crippled in its wings into the maw
Of nature. Why should Mother Nature not
Have swallowed up that mutilated moth?
All living things are eaten. They are naught,
Gadzillions propagated in her wrath.
..We read the tortured visions, overawed
….With slaughter. Dillard pointed us to God.
