A Voice, not an Echo

A Voice, not an Echo

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

Do not let someone else invade your core

Identity.  Do not let her or him

Transpose the truest you or change your score.

The serenade, the nocturne or the hymn

That sings of you is yours—and yours alone.

If you are Irish and your name is Field,

John Field, you show that Chopin how your tone

Is yours.  If he can copy it and yield

His own interpretation of your gift

In nocturnes, let it be, but do not let

His music enter yours. Give him the lift

He needs but be yourself.  Don’t be in debt.

Do not let Salieri change your heart,

Young Mozart.  Master him with genius art.
