The Holy of Holies
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

He long before had been not just on coals.
He realized that he had walked among
Them. Suddenly he realized his goals
Had been long known but only as a young
Man fails to grasp their meaning till his soul
Itself, its spirit, interpenetates
The beauty that your senses would control
If only it brought not the holy states
Of loveliness that young men never grasp
Until too late, that realm of beauty known
In holiness of wonder far from clasp —
Once it has passed like Lucifer’s first groan.
Hear Lucifer’s first groan for erstwhile Christ
Once parted from their once encoded tryst.
