Somnolent Spirituality
Schools closed at noon. The libraries have stopped
Their service early. Government has shut
Its doors. The spiritual who can have lopped
The hours they have to work to help with what
Has been imposed on them by sacred word.
They don’t go home to suffer through the fast;
They go to sleep and seek the blurred and slurred
Escape unconsciousness can offer. Past
The pain of belly emptiness and thirst,
They drowse away the hours till the time
When they must wake to sanctity that’s cursed,
The holiness that says that food’s a crime.
..God save them from the nightmare while they snooze
….That in their nap they’ll be transformed to Jews!
