Wilma Singing Over the Florida Lagoon

Wilma Singing Over the Florida Lagoon

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

When singing turn your voice this way and then

The other, singing for all creatures you

Might reach, not humans only, women, men

And children.  Universal in your view

You swivel voice and face to creatures, all,

Because your throat is meant to reach from God

To everyone.  The cosmos waits.  Enthrall

Its hosts and leave off after you have awed

Them all.  The ospreys want that beauty.  Stun

Them, Wilma, with your mouth. Saint Francis grins

A prayer for them and you.  Forbid the gun,

With wing-like beauty.  Sing against our sins.

Perhaps the mullet too will muse and rise,

Perhaps the jealous angels in her skies.
