The Carat Rule

  The Carat Rule

A diamond mine does not dig up just gems.

It mostly yields a heap of rocks, rocks, rocks.

The mining urge and effort always stems

From greedy, deadly sin.  The greed then stalks

Poor men to do the drudge of work and if

One finds a giant jewel, he does not get

The value of it, does not get a whiff

Of richness, getting only further debt

That evening, drinking beer and left

To afce another day of pounding walls

Of stone below the ground.  The diamond heft

He held in hand is taken.  Bwana calls.

It’s not as if the white man needs the rands.

Instead he needs to tread on “nigger” hands.
