Squirmament of Oddities

          Squirmament of Oddities

“See, see where Christ’s blood streams in the firmament!

One drop of it would save my soul, half a drop, my Christ!

~ Faustus in Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus

The unenlightened man sees blood across

The stars and cries to non-existent Christ

To save him in his ignorance, the cross

And blood to save him.  More a poltergeist

Than savior, Jesus is supposed to throw

His weight around and banish dark.  The nails

That hold him to the wood should clearly show

The man the facts of truth.  Appealing fails.

The drugged up agony of women, men,

These soul-less beasts, means nothing to this god,

This dreamed up god.  Some teachers turn to Zen

In desperation.  Folks are always odd.

The oddities are worst when people spy

That death is lurking in the heartless sky.

~ Phillip Whidden
