Americans can’t stand an ugly mug
In newsrooms. Anchors and reporters must
Be gorgeous, male and female, beauty smug
In telegenic strength. The viewers’ lust
Is catered to, first consideration
There being handsomeness, fun loveliness,
Not uglinesses . . . abomination
To eyes. The ban is on unloveliness.
The contrast elsewhere, at the BBC,
For instance, is so shocking that we laugh
Out loud. The contrast with the ABC
Shows Brits scrape barrels full of charmless chaff.
What’s going on? Is Britain looking out
For talent, not for lips with pretty pout?
