Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

The Stoics, who believed in logic yet

Believed in fate, were stupid, plainly.  Fate

Cannot be proved by logic.  They could sweat

Forever in their brains and vainly skate

Around in argument, but luck or chance

Is what fate ends up being:   even luck

Cannot be proven.  Period. Plump for chance

Is what they should have done.  The rest?  Just chuck

It out.  They knew that human freedom, free

Will can’t be true if Fate is Total Fate.

If Fate requires Free Will . . . it ain’t.  All see

This fact.  The rest of thought is bantam* weight.

Believe in Fate.  Believe in Will. Believe

In Faith.  Their minds decided to deceive.
