Salvific Interdictions

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

When colors are not colors but are notes

And notes are not the pitches of a song;

When shadows are not specters wearing coats

Of transubstantiation argued long;

When fragrances are sheerest silk that shines

On tastebuds of archangels; when the shape

Of love veers up along violet vines

In Purgatory, gates of God will gape;

When throats of devils send out sounds of white,

Not black; when incense flows as lava from

An Arctic limbo, orchids in the night

Of heaven, then you find Christ’s kingdom come.

  When stars reach farther than the ends of space

    And send their spirit, sins will come as lace.
