Reclining on Clouds

Reclining on Clouds

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

The angels lie on clouds in paintings, art

And poetry.  Archangels lead the choir

(The speaking choir)* and are the tenor part

Declaiming angel stanzas formed of fire.

The clouds don’t really matter since they’re fake.

If angels were in cirrhus sculptures made

Of fog, the stone or metal clouds would ache

Because they cannot look convincing.  Shade

And subtlety would be beyond them so

The angels’ mattresses would be a laugh.

Since music is a part of arts, to show

It in solidity would be a gaffe.

Real arts require some nuances, and mists

Of marble look a bit too much like cysts.

*The Bible never uses a word that clearly means “sing,” “singing,” “song,” or “songs” in reference to angels.
