Prayerbooks, Missals and Books of Hours

The monks had visions they were putting wings

 Of angels in their quills.  The page of gold;

Sweet lapis lazuli; vermillion . . . sings

Of hope that later codex covers, bold

With concepts from a purple God, would dress

Themselves in parchment lettering, in vast

Illuminated capitals; would stress

Perfections; would result in beauty’s blast

Contained inside a monastery room

With grayed in walls and shine there like the jewels

Of heaven’s spirit-lit armarium,

As in Ezekiel’s femur renewals.

  Scribes’ daydreams in their blanched scriptoria

    Brought holiness to quilled euphoria.

   Euphoria
