Not as a River

Not as a River

The seasons do not flow along as streams

Or rivers.  Seasons flow as rigid, straight

As light.  They move more smoothly than your dreams

But like them turbulent as rapids late

In nights, in nightmares.  Streams are often swerved

Like light through prisms.  Rivers can be fast

Like freshets. Rivers can be liquid curved

And firmly turned to slower speed towards vast

Seas, ice in them, or oceans.  Seasons just flow on

As unperturbed as the Allah.  Neither dyke

Nor dam prevents the spring, nor stops the dawn

Of fall or summer or icicle spike.

The Amazon and Nile flow, flow, and grow

Until they force their final overflow.
