Light and Small and Tall in Meaning

Light and Small and Tall in Meaning

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

There’s smallness and there’s smallness.  There is light

And lighter yet.  A tiny, tiny foot

Comes down and rests on dipper’s handle, slight.

So slight the weight, it seems, a fairy put

It there.  The dipper floats still, still as still

As if the claw were far away from laws

Of physics.  It sends out a tiny thrill

Of wonderment, of wonderment because

The lightness of the bird comes crashing home

To consciousness.  This bird produces song

Much lighter under all religions’ dome

And teaches us that wonderments belong.

The water in the bucket is unmoved.

    Existence of divinity is proved.
