Human Eyes Must Glare

         Human Eyes Must Glare

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

Our most important goal is adding strength

To feebleness, our own.   If destiny

Is rigid, weaklings wait.  Then cladding strength

(Our human, fragile force) is how we free

Ourselves to function in our fate.  We build

A pattern for our beauty.  If some gods

Then crush that goodness, if our plans are killed,

We lived in honor straining with the odds.

Decrees are mere decrees.  Antigones

Defy them.  Creons and the Furies hate

Us.  Potentates and sly Eumenides

Are criminal.  We stand against sad fate.

The Fates strike blind but we are born to bear

Against them.  Heros hold — and stand and stare.
