   Galaxies eating each other

It is as if the cosmos is one jaw

But huge because composed of trillions, more

Than that, uncountable.  A giant maw

Is swallowing.  Septillion fangs all bore

To wriggles and to death.  Far black holes gape;

Though huge, they gape too large for us to see

The deaths inside them, catastrophe’s shape.

A galaxy  consumes a galaxy.

At microlevels parasites inside

An iris eat away at children’s eyes—

And baby spiders eat their mother, hide

And all—so only beauty can surprise.

  “In all of Heaven and Earth there is no scene

    Of beauty.”  Loving gods become obscene.

~ Phillip Whidden
