Entropy’s Final Nothing
Millennia before I died, the time
Before me stretched far backward . . . backward — far
The eons lay in lifeless silence. Slime
Began to grow as if with plans. A star
Looked down and saw no life. Some cells appeared
Inside some mud, but nothing understood
Since nothing was intelligent. Death veered
In on an asteroid. Nothing withstood
It. Death was everywhere. Much later came
The dinosaurs and they were clobbered too,
And when all life is gone again, from cold
Or flame, then vacuum will be the stew.
What came before me will come back and I
Who mattered not will be in death’s last sky.
