Don’t Put Obstacles on the Tracks

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporar

The writing of a sonnet comes like train

Adventures.  Board a train.  You then sit down.

The sonnet rides along, click, click, no strain.

The journey never causes you a frown

Because the artful, formal rules require

Straightforward movement to the rhyming end.

The rhythm and the rhymes, they make a spire,

Of course.  You only need to make the blend

That rules (the rhyme and rhythm) show.  Present

These two with images to fill lines full.

Do not disrupt the tracks though some resent

The strictness of their steel.  Just let rules pull.

The rules, the locomotive, pull you on.

The sonnet moves as easily as dawn.
