Docility
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
The statues of the heroes and the gods
Stare straight. Immortal marble makes them stare.
Though they were painted once against the odds
Of transience, the stony eyeball pair

Looks out forever now in glaring white.
They look at nothing, still. They cannot see
An eagle soaring but unseen in flight
Will die in decades, yet the spree
Of life is banished from the sight of eyes
That glare, ignoring. Holiness is gone,

Too. No one gives a hoot about these guys
Despite the gorgeousness of godly brawn.
The blank-eyed goddesses are much the same.
Though luscious, wondrous once, their sex is tame.
