“culture is individual” ~ R. H. Blyth
So . . . “individual” a wise man claims
Is culture, never imitative or
Derivative (not secondhand)? It aims
To be unique, it seems, a single door
Of purest gold sprung not from parents but
From nothing with no predecessors in
The past. Tell that to Shakespeare with his glut
Of sources. This is like the sourceless sin
Of Satan at the golden throne of God,
The wickedness ex nihilo. Forebear
My sneering lips. A genius may be odd
But genius does not come from absent air.
Christ spoke and there was light. His speaking lips
Forced sources. Nothing comes from blips.
