Attempts to think like Washington at war
While we are in our studies lined with chintz
And books are doomed, a doomed and wingless chore.
We can’t imagine cultures using flints
For arrowheads and spears. We think we know
The cavemen just because we find their points
(Though shafts and stony head for arms to throw
Are obvious enough). Though roasting joints
Can be inferred, we end with baffled minds
When we come up against the paintings on
The walls and cavern ceilings. Shuttered blinds
Of evidence refuse convincing dawns.
We even find it hard to understand
