“Paul Cartledge reminds us that ‘the ancient Greek
word for “truth” meant literally “not forgetting”.’ ”
~ Michael Schmidt, The First Poets, 22

The truth is never lost. It cannot be.
Suppose that it is sunk somewhere beneath
The waves in coral, underneath the sea,
Not found for centuries. It will still bequeath
Itself somehow millennia away.
Men dive for it and dredge it up. They must
For that is how a man will be. The stay
Concealed in shipwreck, in among the rust
And other encrustations, will not last.
A later aeon will recover truth.
The absolutes, eternal, they are vast.
They never die. They always live in youth.
An Indian conceived the zero long
Before the Muslims found it. Truth is strong.
