Sex Outside Heaven’s Gigantic Ménage a Trois, Thousands Upon Thousands and Ten Thousand Times Ten Thousand
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
The leech, the spider and the rattlesnake
Are evil. Evil is a boring thing,
Too ordinary. They are like the ache
That hovers on the web of life, a wing
Of Lucifer, who, poised, might make the choice
To poison everything across the realm of good,
Or, then again, he might lift up his voice
Inside the choir of angels hymning—should
That ordinary mode of angels please
Him. Gabriel who stands beside him glows
With ordinary angel goodness, knees
Dropped down in ordinary angel pose.
But Lucifer decides he wants to be
No bride . . . but yearns to be a divorcee.
