A puppy is a puppy and a dog

A dog.  When each is sleeping, it remains

Itself, exact.  There’s nothing like a fog

In dogginess.  There are no feline stains

In dog or puppy.  While awake these beasts

Are still essential canines.  When they sleep,

The dog and puppy never need black priests

To tell them what to do.  Their cores have deep

Instructions settled in them.  Doggy claws

Go scrape, scrape, scrape around the world.  Awake,

A puppy kneads with puppy claws.  He gnaws

While dozing, giving mattress lump a shake.

In naps he pushes paws against a teat

His heart remembers, mother’s milky treat.
