“My desolation does begin to make A better life”

“My desolation does begin to make

A better life”

~ William Shakespeare, Antony and Cleopatra

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

When desolation comes, it drags a chance

Behind it as in Caesar’s train.  The past

Reveals less known the loves of new  romance.

A giant ship with mast and mast and mast

Heaves up above horizons once unknown.

A man you knew existed brings

An empire and he bears a thrilling throne,

A double throne for you, a throne with wings.

An empire’s navy he commands.  The shore

Of empire came with him as wedding rules

On crowns above your heads, yet even more

He brings emancipation set with jewels.

You once belonged to fathers and their ways,

Yet now true royal, loving passion sways.
