Triumphant Poetess Rediscovered in Oxyrhynchus Ground Down No More

Throughout millennia and much, much more

Most females found themselves tied down away

From poetry and art.  Each grinding chore

Refused to let the girls and women stray

To epic lines or marble sculptures.  Mind

In work was not allowed.  A loom as task

Was wide enough for women.  Life would bind

Them.  Platos would not even thin to ask

About this slavery.  Spindles were enough

For hearts like Queen Penelope’s.  To weave

And then unweave was woman’s work.  This bluff

Was suitable — creatures made to deceive.

Erinna rivalled Homer in her lines:

    Hexameter perfection long lost shines.
