Single-hearted Soul
The skylark is a single-hearted soul,
A Christian soul in that one aspect, pure
In major key devotion, song its whole
Obsession as its soaring, one sect pure
In melody and purpose. Shakers could
Not in their dancing and their simple song
Compete with this one lyric bird, nor would
They if they understood the dimple song
It flourishes within their firmament.
Their Mother Anne, if she had thought about
It, would have nodded, would have winked assent
To rivalling hymns, one such a clanging shout.
The tiny fluttering dipping wings fly high
To sing of bridal love in deepest sky.
